Why do we have a riding program such as Freedom Ride? Associating with horses can be therapeutic in many ways. In a well thought out program, horses become a way to teach far more than riding. Horses can meet many types of needs in riders, including physical, mental, emotional, and social. Programs such as Freedom Ride make the difference by breaking down the barriers to a fuller life. At Freedom Ride we have the following programs for riders, which we detail below:

  • Theraputic Riding
  • Hippotherapy

THERAPEUTIC RIDING

Therapeutic riding works its magic with individuals of all ages who suffer with a variety of physical, emotional, and learning impediments. Because horseback riding gently and rhythmically moves the rider's body in a manner similar to a human gait, riders with physical disabilities often show improvement in flexibility, balance and muscle strength. Stretching and grooming exercises further increase control and range of motion. The ability to control a horse as well as one's own body inspires self-confidence, responsibility and teamwork. Best of all, it is a thoroughly enjoyable experience, which creates a special relationship between rider and horse and promotes personal challenges.

HIPPOTHERAPY

Hippotherapy is a physical, occupational and speech therapy treatment strategy that utilizes equine movement In the controlled hippotherapy environment, the therapist modifies the horse's movement and carefully grades sensory input. Specific riding skills are not taught (as in therapeutic horseback riding); but rather a foundation is established to improve neurological function and sensory processing. This foundation can be generalized to a wide range of daily activities.
