Freedom Ride’s Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) program provides an innovative, experiential approach to mental health treatment for veterans and other individuals facing emotional, behavioral, or mental health challenges. Conducted by a licensed mental health professional in partnership with an equine specialist, sessions take place on the ground and do not involve riding. Participants engage in structured activities with horses that help build trust, improve communication, strengthen problem-solving skills, and foster healthy coping strategies in a safe and supportive environment.
Horses are uniquely sensitive to human emotions and nonverbal communication, responding honestly and without judgment to what they observe. Through interactions with the horses, participants gain valuable insight into their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, often discovering patterns that may be difficult to recognize in a traditional counseling setting. Veterans coping with service-related stress, trauma, anxiety, depression, or adjustment challenges, as well as individuals struggling with a variety of mental health concerns, benefit from the powerful connections formed through this therapeutic process. The result is increased self-awareness, emotional resilience, confidence, and a greater ability to navigate life’s challenges both inside and outside the arena.
